(8) With regard to (X) of the letter at (5), Mr. Sloss explained that the figure of 350,000 should have read Hongkong dollar sign not rupees and that it referred to the grant for one year. The period for which he suggested a claim should be made from the, Government of Hongkong was a period of 44th years. I am inclined to think that it might be reasonable to ask the Treasury for the grant for a full five years, i.e. from

1st April, 1941 to 31st March, 1946, since the obligations of the University to its staff do not cease on release from internment and if it is accepted that it is reasonable for the grant to be paid even although the University is not functioning, I see no particular reason why it should only be received for the period of internment.

(9) With regard to (Y) of (5), Mr. Sloss said that he had already written to Professor Gordon King asking him to make enquiries with a view to submitting as full a statement as possible, showing what work had been undertaken by members of the Chinese staff during the occupation and what salaries they had received. Admittedly, it will be most difficult to assess the value of salaries received in Japanese yen in terms of the Hongkong dollar, but this is presumably a problem that has to be faced for Government servants.
